Parents are often expected to be the steady ones. The problem-solvers. The people who know what to do next.
But when a young person is struggling with their mental health, even the most capable and experienced parent can feel anxious, uncertain and overwhelmed. Alongside the worry for their child comes self-doubt – Am I saying the right thing? Am I making it worse? Why can’t I fix this?
Recently, we received some moving feedback from a parent whose daughter accessed counselling at Youth Talk.
“As Parents we are supposed to know all the answers. We are supposed to be the experts. We are supposed to have the solution. But when we don’t, then a weight of anxiety, doubt and sheer frustration becomes added to the original concern faced by the child. Suddenly there’s a vortex of confusion that seems to have no beginning, middle or end.”
For this family, Youth Talk became a way forward.
“For our daughter, Youth Talk provided a way out of this maelstrom.”
They spoke about how valuable it was for their daughter to have a space that belonged entirely to her – somewhere she could speak openly and confidentially, without feeling the added pressure of parental worry.
“You let her talk, away from the parental angst and worry, creating an environment in which she could express herself fully and confidentially.”
The parent explained that they didn’t know what was discussed in sessions – and respected that privacy. What mattered was that their daughter had ownership of her feelings and the chance to work things through with a trained professional.
“Youth Talk allowed her total ownership of her feelings and perspective without imposing the added ‘advice’ that worried parents tend to offer.”
While our counselling is always centred on the young person, the impact often extends to the whole family. When a young person begins to feel safer, steadier and more able to cope, parents feel that shift too.
The parent ended with words that mean a great deal to our team:
“I can’t thank the organisation enough for providing this framework for our daughter to consider and manage matters for herself. I would urge any parent or friend to encourage a young person to get in touch with Youth Talk. You make a real difference.”
Mental health doesn’t follow a timetable, and young people don’t need quick fixes – they need space, consistency and someone who will truly listen. We are proud to provide that, and determined to keep doing so for every young person (and family) across St Albans, Harpenden and surrounding areas who needs us.
