A group of 24 remarkable individuals have recently returned from Mount Kilimanjaro, having completed the challenge of a lifetime while raising crucial funds for Youth Talk.

Kilimanjaro is the highest free-standing mountain in the world, towering 5895m above Moshi, providing an awesome backdrop to arrivals at Mt Kilimanjaro Airport. It’s renowned for being the highest peak which can be summited without technical climbing knowledge – but that comes with the warning that it is incredibly tough! Over six days of trekking, the team faced altitude, exhaustion, and moments of doubt – but also shared support, resilience, and lasting friendships.
Callum Hutchinson was the youngest participant and joined during his gap year before heading to university.
“I’ve always loved the idea of travelling,” explained Callum, “and since completing my Duke of Edinburgh Award a few years ago, I’ve dreamt of completing a much bigger challenge, so when the opportunity for trekking Mount Kilimanjaro presented itself, it was a no brainer.
Knowing about Youth Talk and their work, the opportunity to support a local charity that I care about was another perfect reason to attempt this challenge.Mentally and physically, it was one of the most difficult challenges I have ever faced. Even as a reasonably fit group of people, I don’t think anyone was truly prepared for the extremes summit night would bring. Starting our summit attempt at midnight, from 4600m, we had a gruelling 8 hour climb to the top, battling freezing conditions and even hallucinations from the altitude. Everyone banded together for strength and support. Many of us were unsure if we’d make the summit, but the group camaraderie and love for one another built over the week helped so many push through.
I’m so proud of us all – for taking on the challenge and raising funds and awareness for Youth Talk. I feel honoured to have been part of such an amazing group, and have come away with a brand new family!”

Our CEO David Barker is truly awed and inspired by what the team have achieved:
“Climbing Kilimanjaro is an incredible feat of personal and team endurance and resilience – but doing so to support our local young people facing mental health challenges makes it even more profoundly meaningful.
“There is no doubt their determination and tremendous fundraising efforts will change and in some cases save local young lives. Their selfless efforts will mean that vulnerable young people will be able to access the support, stability and hope they deserve.”
Thank you to the entire Youth Talk Team Kili and to everyone who has donated.
You really have helped to change lives.

Our thanks go to Alfie Jourdan for being the driving force for the trip,
and to Discover Adventure for their support and leadership throughout the challenge.
