At Youth Talk, listening isn’t something we say we do. It’s something we practise every day.
Of course, listening happens in the counselling room. That one-to-one space where a young person can finally say out loud what’s been going on in their head. Where they are not judged but feel heard, believed and taken seriously. That kind of listening can be life-changing.
But listening has to go further than that if we truly want to support young people. We need to listen to their voices in everything we do – how services are designed, how spaces feel, how questions are asked, and how decisions are made.
That’s why we’ve launched our Growing Up Survey, inviting young people aged 13-25 to tell us honestly what it’s like growing up today – because they are experts in being young. Not filtered or interpreted but just their lived experience about the challenges they face growing up.
Over the years, their voices have shaped Youth Talk in ways that really matter. Our Youth Panel have helped us improve our forms, administration and communications so they feel clearer and less daunting. They were fundamental in our rebrand – from colours and tone to how we talk about Youth Talk and present ourselves to the world. They advise us on so many things including choosing the colours, décor and furniture in our counselling centre in London Road, making sure the space feels safe, welcoming and right. One thing for sure – they are never backward in coming forward!
Too often, young people are asked for their views once decisions are already made – or worse, they’re consulted and then ignored. Listening only counts if it leads to action.
The Growing Up Survey is one way we’re making space for young people’s voices beyond the therapy room. It’s about understanding the pressures and the realities of growing up today – and using that insight to shape our work, our advocacy and our future.
So when we say We’re listening, what we really mean is:
We’re listening.
We’re learning.
And we’re ready to act.
If you’re aged 13–25, we’d love you to take part. And if you’re a parent, professional or supporter, please help us share it. Because the more we listen, the better we can help ensure every young person has someone who truly hears them.
